The story is about four American soldiers during WWII. In the course of the war, one of them was killed and the other three wanted to give him a proper burial. They went to a local church and asked the priest if they could have him buried in the graveyard. 'Was he baptized?', the priest wanted to know. The friends didn't know. They had never talked about baptism. They had talked about many things. About the people they loved and missed. About things that made them laugh. And about things that made them cry. They had even talked about faith, and God, and about Jesus. But they had never talked about baptism. The priest said, that well, if he could not have a guarantee that the man was baptized, he could not allow him to be buried in the cemetery. But out of compassion for their situation, he could let them bury their friend just outside the fence, on the Northeast corner. The three friends felt this to be a poor second-class status, but probably the best they could get, and so they settled for that. Buried him just where they were instructed to, and marked the grave with a headstone.
When the war was over, they returned to the cemetery, to bid a final farewell to their friend before going back home. But they could not find his grave. Distraught and angered they went to see the priest, to demand an answer. What had he done to their friend's grave?
'After you left,' the priest said, I realized that I had done a terrible thing. I knew I couldn't dig up the grave. So I did the only thing I could do, I moved the fence.
He moved the fence.
